This test identifies gene mutations in the epidermal growth factor receptor gene that correlate with the effectiveness of TKI therapy for the treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Patients with an EGFR mutation respond more favourably to tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy, therefore knowledge of their mutation status will aid in developing an effective first-line course of treatment.
The test looks at 28 mutations in exons 18-21 of the EGFR gene.  DNA is extracted from paraffin embedded tissue and mutation analysis is performed using real-time PCR.
