Macula Risk® is a molecular genetic test that provides an accurate estimate of the progression risk for Age-Related Macular Degeneration. Early identification of individuals at increased risk for this common cause of vision loss has been shown to lead to improved clinical outcomes; individualized managements lead to preservation of sight and less severe disease progression.

Macula Risk® requires a simple saliva or buccal sample to collect your DNA; the test assays the most common AMD-associated genetic variations studied to date and combines these results with your smoking history to determine your risk of progressing to advanced AMD. The test provides a detailed report with genetic interpretation, recommendations and education.

Macula Risk® was launched November 1, 2008 and is available through an eye care provider. Macula Risk® testing is available in Canada through the Bay Area Genetic Laboratory; a copy of the Canadian requisition is available below. For testing laboratories in the US please refer to www.macularisk.com.

The Macula Risk® test is not funded by public health care but may be covered by Extended Benefit Plans, Health Care Spending Accounts or Flex Plans. Ask your insurance provider about your coverage. An official receipt will be generated and sent back with the report to the ordering eye care provider.
